The Vw Cabrio is based on the third generation Golf. Which means it uses the reliable, but somewhat under powered, ABA 2.0L 4 cylinder. Our customer's plan was to utilize the VR6 2.8L6 cylinder from the same generation GTI. He brought us a "pile" of parts and said, "have at it."
The stock 2.0L engine bay.
We completed assembly of the VR6. The cylinder received porting, polishing, Techtonics Tuning (TT) 268 lift cams, TT heavy duty valve springs, and lightweight lifters.
The motor was also upgraded with a billet coolant crossover pipe to replace the factory plastic piece. A lightweight flywheel was also chosen to let the motor rev more freely.
With the stock engine removed, it was now necessary to remove the stock wiring harness, shifter, and clutch system.
The VR6 engine requires use of a newer style cable transmission. This required a replacement of the factory shifter. Pictured above is the stock shifter box from a fourth generation Golf. The bottom box is from a Vw 6N Polo. The Polo box fits perfectly in the third generation Golf's tunnel. This allows a clean swap from a rod shift transmission to the cable style.
The stock 2.0L exhaust was holding up just fine, but the larger 6 cylinder needs more room to breathe.
The exhaust chosen was a 3 inch unit from CTS in Canada. All stainless construction and perfect fitment.
With the supporting VR6 components, the motor was installed into the Cabrio engine bay.
When the motor was removed, we utilized gold reflective heat shielding for the firewall. Gold is one of the best reflectors of heat, and it is aesthetically pleasing.
New radiator, silicone coolant hoses, and a complete AC transplant completed. With any swap at Panzer Performance, working AC is a must because we want you to enjoy your car all year around.
With any custom modifications, a tune is required. This chip was optimized to make the most out of the camshafts.

Now installed and running, the VR6 drivetrain specs are as follows:
OBD 2 VR6 engine
Ported and polished cylinder head
268 camshafts, hd valve springs, and lightweight lifters
2.9 clone intake manifold
Ported exhaust manifolds
Techtonics Tuning 2.5 inch downpipes
Quaife limited slip differential
Diesel Geek Sigma 5 shifter
Diesel Geek shifter cable bushings
With any build at Panzer Performance, we utilize Liquimoly oil for the engine and Redline Racing Oils for the transmission.
Upon completion of testing, the Cabrio was ready for delivery. Another successful project undertaken at our facility here in Bradenton, Florida.
